Permaculture on 10 Acres on the Sunshine Coast

Updated: Jan 30, 2022

While the snow is on the ground, we are planning ahead for expanding our permaculture plan for the upcoming year. It's time to crack out the seed catalogues and update our garden planning spreadsheet so that we have the seeds that we need and know when to plant them. Getting to know your land, where the water runs, where the sunshine falls, the soil composition in different area and even the micro climates on a large property like ours, is all part of permaculture.

Different Plans for Different Areas

As we are on a mountain and have a slope to our property, we have quite a variety of locations on our property where we plant things and the soil, light and water conditions vary quite a bit. We've had to observe and experiment a bit to find the right plants to grow in each area. Our lavender, for example, loves the sandy, well-draining soil on the western facing sunny slope in front of our house.

The orchard area has a pond and running water for a good part of the year and we've planted cover crops and mulched around the fruit trees and berry bushes to ensure a good water supply.
